SM CITY NORTH EDSA LAUNCHES CHAN LIM FAMILY OF ARTISTS AND STUDENTS 2017 EXHIBITION

DEAR DREAMERS
As Chinese New Year fast approaches, SM City North EDSA once again holds festivities to celebrate a much awaited Chinese holiday, one that is associated with ampao (red envelope fiilled with money), tikoy and dragon dance. This 2017, SM City North Edsa has invited the media, Prelel Dares to Dream included, to witness the launch of their Chan Lim Family of Artists and Students exhibit.

A live demo of Chinese painting was held in order to start off the event. A close observation of the live demonstration will tell you just how skilled the Chan Lims are. Being able to produce a beautiful piece in a short amount of time is no small feat.

The Chinese painting workshop will emphasize just how skilled the Chan Lims are. Being able to teach people who are strangers to Chinese painting and calligraphy is not that easy. Coming from a Chinese school, I possess knowledge of Chinese calligraphy.

For those who do not have such a knowledge in Chinese calligraphy, Chinese painting or other kind painting methods might struggle as the technique in holding the mo pi or the brush is different from what they are used to.

Ah, the bamboo, even at our school, the very first thing they will teach you in Chinese painting is the bamboo. With simple but powerful techniques, each stroke can further transform your masterpiece. Regular practise of Chinese calligraphy back in my high school makes learning Chinese painting easier for me, most especially the bamboo painting because bamboo painting is both considered as Chinese calligraphy and Chinese painting.

I would have loved to unleash my imagination but painting while breastfeeding proved to be quite the challenge. Yes, that’s Baby Qlyliz underneath my nursing cover. #NormalizeBreastfeeding

Isaac and Qlyliz were also present to witness the launch of the exhibit. To celebrate the event, I wanted to dress Qlyliz in red. Luckily, I had a red Christmas onesie which Little Dreamers PH sent me.

Before finally opening the exhibit of scrolls and plates, a traditional dance performance, dragon dance and ribbon cutting was performed. I even saw my high school principal, teachers and even my auntie and cousin during the event. My alma mater has always had close ties to the Chan Lim Family of Artists and Students.

Oh, and did I mention that Robin Padilla also graced the event?

SM awarded Chan Lim with the Chan Lim @ 80 Commemorative coin.

For thousands of years, Chinese painting has constantly evolved, adapting to the artists’ environment and imagination. Clearly, the Chan Lim Family of Artists is no stranger to the vast history of Chinese painting as they have been engaged in the arts for close to a half century. In the present, there are three generations of Chan Lim artists who use a wide variety of media, styles and techniques to incorporate Western into Eastern art.

The Chan Lims continue to immerse themselves in the arts by actively developing and promoting brush painting in the Philippines and abroad. The Chan Lims also support several charitable organizations with a special focus on environmental sustainability.

The passion of Chan Lim, the family patriarch, lies in Oil and Watercolor. While most of his art are on canvas, he has forayed into other media such as porcelain plates, Asian lanterns and fans to infuse Western techniques into traditional Eastern art. The Chan Lim siblings Alex, Felix, Rolex and Jolex are all engineers by profession and are all engaged in leadership positions with multinational companies. Bound by their passion for the arts, the Chan Lim family of Artists has conducted numerous art classes, workshops, seminars, and on-the-spot painting demonstrations. They have joined several art exhibits locally and internationally. The elder Chan Lims have successfully nurtured the artistic talents of the third generation. The younger brood enjoys experimenting with different types of media, along with modern digital techniques, and incorporates these into Chinese art.

The year 2017 celebrates Chan Lim’s 80th birth year, a very auspicious milestone in the Chinese culture. All the art exhibits during the year will be highlighting this event. Eight of the exhibits will be specially-themed to celebrate the felicitous family event.

The Chan Lim family is one of the few remaining notable Chinese brush painting artists in the country today, and is sought after in this field. Art classes are conducted in the family studio located in Pasig City. Their paintings can be found in private collections here and abroad.

You may email them at chanlim@yahoo.com or view their artworks at www.chanlim.com.
